Driver

Date of Birth: 4/11/1975
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 238lb
Place of Residence: Mäntyharju – Finland
Occupation: Rally Driver and Owner of DriveX Rally School

1996 Finnish Junior Rally Championship Runner-Up
1997 Finnish Ice Racing Champion
1999 Finnish Production Rally Championship Runner-Up
1999 FIA World Production Rally Championship 10th
2000 Finnish Production Rally Champion
2000 FIA World Production Rally Championship 4th
2004 FIA World Production Rally Championship 3rd
2004 FIA World Rally Championship 19th
2008 Finnish RallyCross Runner-Up

Jani Paasonen started his rallying career in 1995 with Opel Ascona, an underdog of a car he saved up to buy with his own money to pursue a childhood dream. Just a year later he placed second in the Finnish Junior Rally Championship series against stiff competition. By 1999 he was competing in Production Mitsubishi Lancer, placing third overall in Finnish Rally Championship. The 2000 rally season proved that Jani has speed and skills to make good results on international level; he won the Production class in Sweden and Finland and achieved the Finnish Championship title.

In 2001 Jani made a big step from Production to World Rally Car and became the first non-Swede to win South Swedish Rally. Second win of the season followed in Mänttä Rally, the traditional warm up event for the classic stages of Rally Finland. Jani was the first non-works driver to compete in Rally Finland with Ford Focus World Rally Car and impressed many and scored good stage times. He climbed as high as third place overall before an accident ended his rally, but he had showed that he is able to drive as fast as the top drivers.

In the 2002 Swedish Rally Jani was given a chance to drive third Mitsubishi’s factory World Rally Car. Again, there was great speed at the beginning, but a tire puncture destroyed his chances at a good result. At Rally Finland his target was to be the fastest Mitsubishi driver and he achieved that by placing eight overall. One of the fellow drivers was forced to withdraw from Rally New Zealand and as the result Paasonen was offered a bonus rally. At that event Jani made a rallying history he was the first driver to score the fastest time for Mitsubishi’s World Rally Car.

Mitsubishi decided to pull out of the 2003 World Rally Championship and it was clear that his program during the season would be very restricted. He contested only one World Rally Championship event in Germany and was waiting for Mitsubishi´s decision about the next season believing that he will be one of the works drivers. As Mitsubishi’s financial situation worsened, the team decided not to re-enter the 2004 season.

In 2004 Paasonen was invited to drive one of the OMV World Rally Team´s Production Mitsubishis in the 2004 FIA Production Car World Rally Championship series. He won the first round in Sweden dominating the event from start to finish, leading from the first stage and taking 13 out of 19 stage wins. In Rally Finland he got a one-off drive in a works Skoda Fabia World Rally Car and he took sixth place overall. This was the best World Rally Championship result ever for the Skoda Fabia World Rally Car team and also Paasonen´s personal best result at this level. Jani’s drive was rewarded with the Inmarsat Star of the Rally Award. Before the last Production Car World Rally Championship event in Australia, he was leading the series, but forced to retire and placed third in the series.

For the 2005 season Jani made a contract with Skoda World Rally Team sharing team´s second works car. In 2006 and 2007 additionally to rally racing it was time to learn something new – Skoda Octavia Cup in Czech Republic. Jani achieved a handful of podium places.

Lately Jani has taken part in one of the most spectacular racing series, the European Rally Cross Championship. He also owns a rally driving school DriveX where he teaches a new generation of upcoming rally stars

In 2009 with help of NCRALLY Team Jani came to the US to compete at International Rally New York, where he displayed incredible skills by leading the rally overall up to the last stage, where mechanical problems forced Jani to settle for second place finish.
